The pages answering this question sell Etsy tools, Etsy courses, or Etsy alternatives — the verdict was written before the question was asked. Ours is a computation. Etsy is worth it if two numbers work: the failure case (what you lose if the shop sells nothing) and your product's case (what it keeps after the full stack). Both fit on this page.
If your shop sells nothing at all in its first four months, your total loss is: the set-up fee ($15–$29), four months of listing renewals on the listings you keep alive ($0.20 each per cycle — 20 listings = $4 per cycle), and whatever you spent on materials or samples. For a digital shop that is roughly $20–$40 of total downside. For handmade, add one materials batch you still own. Compare that to a store door whose rent continues regardless, or a course whose fee is gone on day one. Etsy's failure case is cheap — which is a real, countable argument for trying it with a specific product.
On a $25 sale, Etsy keeps about $2.97 (listing share, 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing, small regulatory fee) — call it 12%. At $60, the same stack is about $6.70, near 11%. The fixed $0.25-and-$0.20 pieces punish cheap items: at $8, the stack is over $1.50, near 19%, before your costs. That is the whole worth-it equation: the cheaper your product, the more of it Etsy eats. Products priced under $10 with real costs attached are where 'not worth it' is usually just arithmetic wearing a mood.
| Your price | Etsy stack (approx.) | Stack as % |
|---|---|---|
| $8 | $1.52 | 19% |
| $15 | $2.14 | 14% |
| $25 | $2.97 | 12% |
| $40 | $4.41 | 11% |
| $60 | $6.67 | 11% |
Computed from the published fee stack in the dataset, checked October 2026. Offsite Ads (12–15%) only apply to sales Etsy's ads brought you, and only above the threshold rules described on the door pages.
The First Door Kit's pre-flight runs your price through the full stack and your idea through the specificity check, then gives the open / narrow / don't-open verdict in writing.

Usually the arithmetic above, discovered late: a cheap product, the full stack a surprise, two listings, three weeks, no sales. The fees are published and stable; the expectations were not. That is a fixable sequence, not a rigged game.
The transaction fee rose from 5% to 6.5% in 2022 and a set-up fee arrived in 2024 — the dataset's change log exists because this history is real. What matters for a decision today is today's stack, computed above, not the trend's direction.
On an ad-attributed sale, add 12% (or 15% at lower volumes) to the stack. It only triggers when Etsy's ad produced the sale, and above $10,000 in yearly sales participation is mandatory. Beginners should price assuming an occasional ad sale, not fearing every one.
