Amazon: climb the ladder, do not buy the building

Amazon is where the shoppers are — and where beginners lose the most money the fastest, usually by buying inventory for a category they were never approved to sell. The ladder exists to prevent exactly that: start on the Individual plan ($0.99 only when something sells), sell used books and sourced goods first, and let sales — not hope — pay for each next rung.

Every incumbent answers Amazon questions from inside a seller account. This page answers them from where you actually are: no account, no sales history, a garage.

Who this door fits — and who it does not

Fits you if

  • You can source used goods — books, media, thrift finds — or you already have some.
  • Your budget covers a first small order AND a second one ($100–$300 is a sane ladder start).
  • You can give it steady hours: Amazon rewards listing volume and punishes neglect.

Not your door if

  • Your whole budget is under $100. The first inventory plus shipping leaves nothing for the second order, and Amazon is a reorder business.
  • Your plan starts with a brand-name product you found on a supplier site. Brand gates will likely stop that listing cold.
  • You want passive. At the ladder's bottom rungs, you are the warehouse, the shipper, and the customer service desk.

The fees, dated

Every fee on this door

FeeAmountWhat it actually is
Individual plan$0.99 per item soldNo monthly fee. The right starting plan for almost every beginner.
Professional plan$39.99 per monthWorth it only when you sell 40+ items a month — the $0.99s cost more than the plan. A later rung, not a starting cost.
Referral fee8–17% by category15% is a common planning number (books and home goods sit there; electronics are lower, clothing higher).
FBA fulfillment (optional)Roughly $3–$6 per small itemIf Amazon stores and ships it. Plus monthly storage priced by volume. Merchant-fulfilled (you ship) skips this and keeps the work.
Account opening$0Approval to sell in gated categories or brands is separate from opening the account — see the trap.

The stack, totaled

Worked example, checked October 2026: a $25 used book sold on the Individual plan, shipped by you, costs $3.75 referral + $0.99 plan = $4.74 to Amazon. The same sale through FBA adds roughly $3–$6 of fulfillment.

The trap in this door

Gates. Some categories and many brands need approval before you may list one item — approval that can require invoices from real distributors and a sales history you do not have yet. Services charge $200–$350 per category to help existing sellers through gates; nobody with a course to sell will print the beginner's version: some categories are effectively closed to day-one accounts, so start on the open rungs and earn the closed ones.

The line no platform will print

Don't start with this door if your whole budget is under $100 — the first inventory plus shipping leaves nothing for the second order, and Amazon is a reorder business.

Time to first sale, honestly

1–4 weeks once stock is listed is a normal planning range. The listing part is fast; the sourcing part is the job.

Questions about this door

Do I need an LLC or a business license to start?

Amazon lets individuals open seller accounts with personal identification and tax information. Forming a company is a legal/tax decision for later — it is not the entry ticket, whatever a formation service's blog says.

What are the open rungs for a brand-new account?

Used books and media are the classic first rung: rarely gated, cheap to source, easy to grade honestly. Many household categories are open too. Toys in the holiday quarter, supplements, topicals, and big brands are where new accounts meet gates.

FBA or ship it myself at the start?

Ship it yourself while volume is small — you keep the fee and learn the work. FBA earns its cost when your time per parcel costs more than the fulfillment fee, which for most ladder-climbers is a few dozen sales in.
