Versus · verdicts, not feature tables
These two barely compete for the same beginner, and that is the answer most comparisons miss. Etsy is where individuals sell things with a maker attached. Amazon is where products sell themselves from a catalog page the seller does not control. Your product already knows which one it is; your job is to listen to it.
| Your situation | The verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You make it by hand | Etsy | Amazon Handmade exists, but the catalog buries the maker. On Etsy the maker is the marketing. |
| You sell digital files | Etsy | Amazon has no real home for a beginner's planners and templates. Etsy's digital shelf is a mature, searched category. |
| You source used books / goods | Amazon (the ladder) | Catalog selling is what Amazon's machine is for. Start on the open rungs and mind the gates. |
| You want in with under $40 total | Etsy | $19–$33 opens the whole shop. Amazon can start near $40 too — but its cheap start only works for the sourced-goods game. |
| You fear being delisted or gated | Etsy | Etsy has rules — handmade, vintage, and design ownership are enforced — but no category-approval desk for ordinary beginner goods. Amazon's gates are a standing feature, not a bug. |
| You want the biggest possible ceiling later | Amazon | If the plan grows into volume, private label (later, funded, ungated-by-then), and FBA logistics, Amazon's ceiling is the higher building. Beginners underestimate how much later 'later' is. |
Neither, if your stock is used household goods that are neither handmade nor catalog-worthy — eBay and the resale apps move those faster and cheaper. And neither fixes 'I have nothing to sell yet': that is the finder's no-door verdict, and it comes with homework, not a platform.
Default beginner answer: maker or designer → Etsy; sourcer of goods → Amazon's ladder. The beginner who forces a handmade product through Amazon's catalog, or a sourced commodity through Etsy's story-shelf, is fighting the building they rented.
